Dr. Joseph Mercola has two kinds of oil in his pantry: olive oil and coconut oil. Watch this video to find out why.
Coconut oil is beneficial for:
- thyroid health – due to its metabolic effect, coconut oil increases the activity of the thyroid and help you lose weight
- heart health – lowers cholesterol
- and it’s great applied to your skin – as a makeup remover, moisturizer
Of these two oils, Dr. Mercola uses olive oil for salads, and coconut oil for cooking. Why does he use coconut oil for cooking? Because it doesn’t oxidize at high temperatures like live oil can, and industrial oils do. Speaking of industrial oils, avoid these polyunsaturated oils: canola, safflower, soy, sunflower, corn.
What … avoid canola? Yes! Many people think canola oil is good for them, but it’s not. Follow the money, and read this article about the Great Con-ola. If you eat packaged food, read labels carefully; if it says canola on the label, don’t buy it. I recently noticed canola oil on the ingredient list of a popular brand of hummus. Using canola oil in hummus instead of olive oil means the manufacturer’s focus is on cheap, not quality.
Now, back to coconut oil. Look for these qualities in a good coconut oil:

You can buy good quality coconut oil from Dr. Mercola’s site or Wilderness Family Naturals. I bought mine from Green Pasture, but I don’t see it on their website today.
Dr. Mercola will be the keynote speaker at Wise Traditions, the Weston A. Price Foundation’s International Conference in Dallas, November 11 – 13, 2011. I’ll be there!
If you want to learn more about the health benefits of coconut oil, here’s a good article from real food blogger Cheeseslave, and read Bruce Fife’s well-researched book The Coconut Oil Miracle. Be well!
Love the reminder about coconut oil. We use it, but sometimes forget to use it all the time…. and I’m excited about the conference. Wish I could go. You’ll have to fill me in on all you are learning!
Hi, Sharon. Try coconut oil on your skin too! You can use it as an eye makeup remover and moisturizer.
What if you hate the taste or smell of coconuts? I can’t use the “traditional”, unrefined oil because it makes me want to gag. Refined (odorless and tasteless) coconut oil is still going to be better than canola or vegetable oils.
Hi, Betsy. Yes, I agree that refined coconut oil is better than canola and other industrial oils.
Making VCO a *part of* recipes INSTEAD of taking it by itself, is the key!
I, too, gag on *straight* virgin coconut oil, but I have discovered –through trial & error– that it blends well with certain other foods, even disappearing behind some of their flavors. . .
Such as peanut butter:
1 part each PB & VCO plus a tad of raw honey = mmmMMMmmm!
VCO + non-hydrgenated margerine + raw honey + cinnamon (on crackers or bread) is *great!*
Substitute VCO for most –or part of– the oil in *any* given recipe. Cook with it, or throw it in after the cooking is through, and mix it in. (Don’t expect to brown foods with it, though, as you would have to overcook your food to get it to brown!)
VCO is an important constituent in the *food* chain . . . treat it like a food, instead of a supplement, but one to be blended with healthy complimentary foods. (;
Great website! I tried to use coconut oil for cooking.. but it smokes a lot and everyone starts coughing everytime i fry something in it. Why is that so? I have switched to traditional peanut oil as it seems inert at high temperatures too!

Yes. I agree with you coconut oil is better than any other oils. coconut oil is used as a food ingredient in salads, cakes, cookies, ice-cream, and in whipped toppings for baked and other confectionery goods.
